A small boy in the 1950's could not get his tongue round the name of his uncle's Armstrong Siddeley and always called it a 'Tumtumtiddly' hence the esoteric name of this website, and also of my Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane.
Armstrong Siddeley, established in 1919 when Armstrong Whitworth took over the Siddeley Deasy company, was for over forty years, until 1960, an English manufacturer of high quality, prestigeous coach built motor cars bearing the famous Sphinx mascot.
The purpose of this website is twofold. Firstly it is to provide anybody interested in hiring a rare classic motor car for a wedding, civil partnership ceremony, anniversary, celebration or other special occasion, with the opportunity to rent an Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane drop-head coupe 'Tumtumtiddly', Armstrong Siddeley Saphire Limousine 'Temperance' or Armstrong Siddeley Whitley 'Tiffany' with chauffeur(se) and to provide them with an indication of cost.
Originally I invited family and friends to suggest names for the Saphire Limousine, but following suggestions such as Big Bertha and Two Ton Tess, I decided to rely on my own imagination. I bought her in Edinburgh, and decided to drive her home. The journey home gave me inspiration (420 miles in a car that I was not familiar with, that was over fifty years of age, and done in a day was quite an adventure!) . Two tons of motorcar, and a 3.4 litre engine based on technology which was almost sixtry years old, and she averaged over 21 miles to the gallon!! This big beautiful lady drank much less than I expected, so I called her 'Temperance'. Coincidentally Temperance was my great-great-grandmothers name, although there is no evidence as to whether she lived up to her name or not!
Please go to Rent a Classic Car (click here) to find out about renting any of these magnificent and very rare classic cars. To gain an idea of the costs involved, to find more information or to enquire about making a booking please visit Contact & Prices (click here).
Secondly, it is to enable other classic car enthusiasts, whether owners of classic cars or not, to learn more about the history of Armstrong Siddeley and the company's range of quality motor cars. Visit Gallery (click here)to see a selection of recent photographs of my own Hurricane 'Tumtumtiddly', Saphire 'Temperance' and Whitley 'Tiffany' together with several 'visiting' vehicles.
Visit About Armstrong Siddeley (click here)for more information about the company and about post war models in particular. Finally for links to other relevant or interesting sites please go to Links (click here)
